Profile: Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yu Jung

Seo Seung Jae was born in Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea on September 4, 1997. He began playing badminton under the influence of his parents. At just nine years of age, he started his competitive career, which culminated in a spot in the South Korean national team. He has been with the national team since 2014.

Two years younger than Seo Seung Jae, Chae Yu Jung was born 190 kilometers from Jeollabuk-do in Busan. Like Seung Jae, she was inspired to pursue badminton under the guidance and support of her family. Although she was born two years later than her partner, she entered the national team earlier, becoming one of its youngest players in 2011.

The two shuttlers began playing together in 2018. Their first outing was at the 2018 New Zealand Open, where they took second place. They immediately followed their performance with a title victory at the 2018 Australian Open.

Notable Victories

Since their pairing in 2018, Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yu Jung went on a tear on the BWF World Tour. After their debut year, they immediately set their sights on the 2019 season, bagging two World Tour titles.

Their first 2019 title was at the 2019 Spain Masters. There, the duo defeated the Taiwanese pair of Wang Chi Lin and Cheng Chi Ya.

They immediately followed up their stellar performance with another impressive title finish at the 2019 German Open. Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yu Jung captivated fans by defeating the dominant Indonesian duo of Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.

In 2022, the pair bagged gold at the Australian Open. At the 2022 Australian Open, they faced their compatriots Jeong Na Eun and Kim Won Ho. Seo and Chae made short work of their opponents, defeating them in straight sets.

A year later, the duo would chalk up their biggest victory. At the 2023 BWF World Championships, Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yu Jung advanced to the finals to face the Chinese team of Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong.

The two teams engaged in a back-and-forth nail-biting match that went three games. In the final game, Seo and Chae clinched a much-needed three-point lead to beat their opponents 21-18.

The victory sent shockwaves across the mixed doubles division. They won a World Championship title by dethroning a team that the badminton world deemed unstoppable.

After their World Championship victory, Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yu Jung went on to bag another title on the World Tour at the 2023 China Open. Here, they defeated the French duo of Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue to bring their World Tour title tally to five.

Playing Style

Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yu Jung have a versatile playing style. Their adaptive approach to the game enables them to switch tactics depending on what their opponents bring to the table.

Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Let’s look into some aspects of their on-court tactics.

First, one thing that sticks out is how both players play with their left hands. Since most players have a right-handed playing style, Seo and Chae’s shots can be disorienting and unpredictable.

Another aspect of their adaptive style is how they position themselves defensively and offensively. When it comes to most teams, players will often assign themselves to either the rear or front-court position and stay there for most of a match — but not Sae Seung Jae and Chae Yu Jung.

Both players seem equally adept at switching not just from one side of the court to the other but also from the front to the back of their ends. This flexibility in positioning enables the team to cover the court effectively.
