Welcome to yet another honest product review. Today, I will be reviewing the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip. For all my other reviews, check out the badminton equipment page.

Prior to testing this product out, I had never actually used it before. If I were to think about it, I can’t remember meeting any player that actually uses the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip either in my over 15 years of playing badminton! Perhaps there is a very dedicated group of players that use this grip. If you’re one of them, let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

It’s important to note that the following review is being written after playing only one 2-hour session with the grip. I am also a player who sweats more than the average badminton player. So take those factors into consideration when reading on with the review.

Now, let’s dive right into it!

True to its name, the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip emphasizes maximum tackiness, which refers to how sticky the material of the grip is. This grip is meant to give you the sensation of the racket handling being glued to your hand due to how sticky it is. Even if you are a player who has especially sweaty hands, this grip is supposed to allow you to maintain a very secure hold on the racket through its extreme tackiness.

The Yonex Tacky Fit Grip falls into the category of an overgrip. As I have described in my post covering the various Yonex Grips: overgrips refer to the type of grips that are appended on top of the original/replacement grips, increasing the thickness of the handle grip and can offer additional gripping benefits.

Overgrips have more versatility than original/replacement grips in providing benefits through the grip qualities of tackiness, absorbency, and/or hardness.

Freshly Applied Yonex Tacky Fit Grip
Diamond pattern on the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip

The Yonex Tacky Fit Grip has a pretty neat design with its pattern of diamond shapes throughout the grip. It definitely stands out against the grips that are just one solid pattern.

The Yonex Tacky Fit Grip is 0.7 mm (0.03 in) in thickness, but compared to my regular Yonex Super Grap overgrip which has a thickness of 0.6 mm (0.024 in), it actually felt thinner. I was actually pretty surprised to discover that the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip was not thinner than the popular Super Grap.

Overall, I would give the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip a rating: 3.3 out of 5.0

Let’s dive into why I gave the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip this rating of 3.3 out of 5.0!

Comfort

Comfort Rating: 2.5 out of 5.0

I define comfort as a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint. What I am looking for from a comfort aspect is if the product provides a pleasant gripping experience. From the sensation of holding the grip to the degree the grip makes the game play more enjoyable.

The Yonex Tacky Fit Grip feels extremely sticky, which is a no brainer as the tackiness quality is its namesake. The grip itself feels like the underside of scotch tape.

Personally, however, the tackiness of the grip did not boost the enjoyment of any of my games. I prefer using grips that are on the dryer side.

The reason I scored the comfort rating at a 2.5 out of 5.0 is because the racket felt like it was going to slip out of my hand when I was executing shots that took bigger swings – such as clears and smashes. This really gave me no peace of mind throughout warm-up, as I was constantly worried about losing control of the racket.

If thinking and worrying about an accessory consumes a lot of my attention and distracts me, I will find it much less comfortable to play with.

As you are aware, warm-up takes place at the very beginning of your badminton session. Therefore, right off the bat, my first impression of the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip was extremely low.

While it may have been an unfounded concern, I still found myself applying the Yonex Grip Powder multiple times to my hand and rubbing it into the grip to get a better hold of the racket.

My worries over the grip distracted from my playing experience, as I was unable to completely focus on my mental game throughout the badminton session. And as badminton players are quite familiar with, not being completely on top of your mental game can lead to silly mistakes, unforced errors, and an overall poor playing experience.

Durability

Durability Rating: 3.5 out of 5.0

I define durability as the ability to withstand wear, pressure, and damage. From a durability standpoint, I am looking for the grip product to remain intact and retain the same feel and quality as if it were newly applied.

Yonex Tacky Fit Frip Post Badminton Session
Yonex Tacky Fit Grip after a full badminton session

At the end of the 2-hour session, the grip did remain intact. There was no part of the grip that was becoming undone from when I had applied the grip at the beginning of the session. Looking closely at the grip itself, there was also no noticeable blemishes to the grip, nor was there any grip residue that was left on my hand.

So why the 3.5 out of 5.0? The answer is that the grip seemed to have lost its tackiness when I picked the racket back up 1 week after my testing session.

Simply picking up the racket, I immediately noticed that it did not have that same level of stickiness that was so prominent when I used it new only one week back. Take this observation with a grain of salt though. As I mentioned above, I did apply the Yonex Grip Powder a couple times during the testing session to address the fear of the racket slipping out of my hand.

I may need to give the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip another chance in the future and avoid using the grip powder. But for now, I am sticking to my rating of 3.5 out of 5.0 for durability.

Feel

Feel Rating: 4.0 out of 5.0

I define feel as how well a player is able to maintain control over their shots by means of handling their racket. This involves how the grip aids the transmission of subtle movements from the player’s hand to the racket.

The Yonex Tacky Fit Grip provided an above average feel in that it was extremely easy to grip, feeling much thinner than its product dimensions claim it to be. Especially as a control player, I appreciate grips that are less bulky so that I can apply a firmer grip on the racket to execute shots with utmost control.

I felt that the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip allowed for me to achieve a quick response in my racket according to my hand and finger movements. Outside of the worries expressed above in clearing and smashing, I did not have any complaints as it came to more technical shots at the net or playing shots defensively.

Critical Thoughts of the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip

  1. Too slippery to the touch. The Yonex Tacky Fit Grip felt overly slippery, causing concerns that the racket would fly out of my hand. Especially for players who produce more hand sweat, this product may not suit you well.
  2. Tackiness diminishes quickly. For a grip with a namesake of tackiness, losing this quality decreases its value immensely.

Conclusion

While the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip was not my cup of tea, I think it’s still worth a try if you are exploring different grip options.

Check out my ratings table for this grip product again in summary:

I would recommend this product to control players who really enjoy playing with an extremely tacky grip and who also tend to have dryer hands (less perspiration). These players would be able to capitalize on the great feel the Yonex Tacky Fit Grip offers, without fear of losing their hold of the racket during a rally.
