Badminton is a sport that’s all about precision and agility, and at the heart of every game lies a seemingly simple yet critical piece of equipment — the shuttlecock. The badminton shuttlecock is arguably the star of every game. Without it, you and I won’t be treated to the fast-paced action only seen in badminton. However, what goes into making the perfect shuttlecock? More importantly, what standards does a shuttlecock have to meet to be game-worthy?
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) requires shuttlecocks to have skirts, each measuring between 62 to 70 mm in length, arranged in a circular pattern with a diameter of 58 to 68 mm. The skirt must be securely fastened to a base, which should be round and have a diameter of 25 to 28 mm. The shuttlecock should also weigh anywhere from 4.74 to 5.50 grams.

The Feathered vs Non-Feathered Shuttlecock: Weights, Lengths, and Acceptable Differences
A trip to your local badminton store will show you that there are two kinds of shuttlecocks — feathered and synthetic. Can both be used in badminton games?
According to the BWF, the answer is yes — and that’s why there are standards for both!
The BWF’s equipment guidelines contain the acceptable qualities for both feathered and synthetic shuttlecocks. Feathered shuttlecocks must contain 16 feathers, each measuring 62 to 70mm long. All of them need to be along a base that accounts for most of the shuttlecock’s weight of 4.74 to 5.50 grams. For non-feathered or synthetic shuttlecocks, the standards are similar. However, the BWF allows a 10% variation in weight due to differences in material and density.
In short, both feathered and synthetic shuttlecocks are acceptable for all levels of badminton. They just need to follow the BWF’s standards for how long and heavy shuttlecocks should be.
How the BWF Approves Shuttlecocks
Determining whether a shuttlecock is fit for play is a task the BWF takes seriously. For this reason, the BWF follows a strict procedure for approving and certifying shuttlecocks before they’re used for games.
The BWF shuttlecock approval process takes place every May and November and takes roughly two months to complete. It begins with selection and testing. Once a batch of manufactured shuttlecocks passes this phase of the approval process, the BWF certifies it and makes it part of a list of approved shuttlecocks. From here, the batch of shuttlecocks is subject to additional quality control measures. The batch can only be integrated into BWF-sanctioned games or events after it has undergone this step.
Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the shuttlecock approval process. Let’s talk about the process in greater detail.
Physical Inspection
Before a shuttlecock can make its way into a BWF-sanctioned event, it must undergo a series of tests to determine its compliance with BWF standards. These tests are conducted by accredited laboratories and BWF committee members who meticulously assess characteristics such as feather length, feather placement, and weight for feathered shuttlecocks, or skirt design and weight for synthetic shuttlecocks.
Speed Testing
Besides material and dimensions, the BWF tests shuttlecocks based on their speed and trajectory. To evaluate a shuttlecock’s speed, a player or tester executes a full underhand stroke that contacts the shuttle over the back boundary line. This stroke must impart an upward angle and a direction parallel to the sidelines.
A shuttlecock of correct speed should land not less than 530 mm and not more than 990 mm short of the opposing back boundary line.
If the shuttlecock lands beyond the 990-mm margin of the back boundary line, it’s too light.
On the other hand, if the birdie lands even a millimeter shy of the 530 mm limit, there may be a problem with the shuttlecock’s skirt. This deviation in the standard can also mean that the birdie is too heavy.
Quality Control and Certification
Shuttlecock manufacturers play a pivotal role in this process since they’re responsible for crafting shuttlecocks that adhere to the BWF’s strict guidelines. Once a batch of shuttlecocks meets these standards, it receives certification from the BWF. The certification indicates that it is approved for official games.
This certification is like a badge of honor, signifying that the shuttlecock is ready for professional competition and will endure the high demands of our fast-paced sport.
Post-Approval Integration
Once the BWF has approved a shuttlecock or a batch of shuttlecocks for play, it adds it to a list of approved shuttlecocks. The certified shuttlecock batches will have their manufacturers, serial numbers, and manufacturer contact details open to view. These shuttlecocks can now see some action on the court.
However, shuttlecock approvals aren’t forever. The certifications issued by the BWF do come with an expiration date. For this reason, manufacturers need to dial in their production processes regularly to ensure that their shuttlecocks consistently meet the BWF’s equipment standards.
